What pound test is preferred and what kind of line with a bobber dead stick? Also if a leader is used what type of swivel do you use and what lbs test? What kind of sinker? Split shots seem to be where most break offs happen.

I like to use 8# Fireline Ice for all my 'eye combos, deadsticks included. When I tie on a leader, I used a barrel swivel and usually the same pound test fluoro leader. Haven't lost one yet on this. I use split shots too so I'm not sure why you're having a break off at that point. Are you using mono?

One method for using split shots is to crimp them on near the end of the mono line, then slide them up. Tie on the hook above the damaged spot and cut it off as a long tag end. The split shot may slip, but should stay in position until a fish bites.
