Vexilar Gain Setting

I have a new FLX28 and am wondering how everyone is going about setting the initial gain setting when first sitting down at a hole. Are you setting it based on the jig and if so are you shooting to have a solid red indication for the jig or a lower setting to where the jig just shows up in green (obviously standard color palate).

I set mine based on the jig. I'll drop it down with the gain at lowest and slowly turn it up until I can get the jig to be green. The only time I like to make the jig to be red is when I am setting the depth on my bobber line. Crank it up so the sinker and jig/minnow is solid red. That way I can easily find where my minnow is compared to the bottom.

So you typically leave your gain setting at the level that keeps your jig green the entire time you fish?

That is correct. I did some looking online about setting the gain. I found the following on the Vexilar website that talks about the importance of making the jig a green signal:

"It is critical to set your gain level so your lure or bait is displayed as a green signal. If the gain is set too high, the ultra powerful receivers of the Vexilar unit will make everything suspended below you look like one big flashing mass of colored lights. When set properly, you clearly know where your lure is, and where it is in relation to all the other targets you also see on your display. The ideal scenario is that when you drop your lure down to a fish target, you see the fish signal move upward to meet your falling lure"
