New to ice fishing - Help

Guys. I'm new to ice fishing and would like some general advice. I bought an auger and vexilar and would like some advice on where to start from there.

I would like to target panfish starting out and will be primarily fishing on Lake Namakagon in Northern WI. I'm wondering on how to start scouting for fishing spots. Are guys using depths as a starting point or what are you using for a determination of where to start fishing? Sorry for such an open ended question, but I need some help with the basics. Panfish locations, patterns, etc. Any advice would be really appreciated. [b][/b]

For first starting out, fish near areas that other people are fishing. Maybe check out weedy areas or fish cribs.

There look to be some necked down areas on this lake so BE CAUTIOUS of thin ice if traveling through those areas.

Most lakes consist of many types of structure. For panfish, I typically look at a few different things. Holes and humps are always good places to look for fish. Other features I look for are tight break lines near deep water (Fast drop offs, also called transition areas), and weed lines. Early ice, Panfish will often cruise shallow in weeds, so dont overlook anything! stay open minded, and remember that mobility is key to finding fish on the ice!

Thanks for the advice, especially on the thin ice areas. Does the ice get thin in these areas due to the higher volume of water?

Also, is there a way to identify location of cribs other than word of mouth?

any preference bait? wax worms or spikes?

Current is what thins the ice in narrow areas on some waters and a chain of lakes like Namekagon is part of could be subject to that. Best to stay with established travel routes that others use or test the ice with a chisel as you walk if you're not sure.

The cribs should be on lake mapping chips, or try asking local bait shops or the Lake Assn. for info.

If you are targeting panfish, I'd highly recommend spikes. They will store for longer as well as last longer on your hook.
